THE HISTORY DEPARTMENT

PDFPrintE-mail

The History Department has been awarded a grant of £1,000 following a successful application to the Welsh Government.  The grant's aim is to contribute towards a deeper understanding of the causes, events and results of the First World War and its effect on life in Wales.

The pupils will be given the opportunity of researching into the history of former pupils of Llandysul Grammar School who were killed in action and whose names appear on the memorial plaque in the school library. We will also be researching into the history of the conscientious objectors and creating an exhibition recounting their courageous stand.  In addition, members of the modelling club are busy creating a diorama of part of the front line in the Battle of the Somme.  Our hope is that everything will have been completed by September 2016, when the work will be exhibited in the new school.

Every Friday the modelling club is held from 1.00 to 1.45.  At the moment we are about to complete a model of a sailing boat.  Our next project will be a panorama of the front line in the Somme.  We will also be researching into the background of the battle and life at the front line where thousands of young men from both sides were killed due to the negligent of Generals and politicians.

Remember to look at the History notice board to find out more about former pupils of Llandysul Grammar School who lost their lives in the Great War.  Rhys Beynon Evans a former pupil, was a member of the air force and was killed above the village of Lens on the 1st of May 1917.  He was the uncle of the late Mr Reg Evans a former Maths teacher.  The school is also indebted to Mrs Evans for her gift of artifacts and documents to be used in lessons.
